Something You Want to See Built? Submit a CIP Project!

A few newsletters ago, we introduced Salt Lake City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and shared some CIPs that Sweet Streeters submitted last year. In short, the CIP program allows anyone who lives in Salt Lake City to submit an idea for a small- to medium-sized project that makes long term changes. This could be neighborhood traffic calming, a signalized mid-block crossing, a protected intersection or roundabout, park/public space improvements, or a section of a neighborhood byway!

By the way, did you know that the city’s neighborhood byways projects do not receive dedicated funding? They’re currently reliant on one-time allotments, such as the CIP! If you want to see your nearest byway built, this is a great way to accelerate progress.

If you’ve been thinking about submitting a CIP, the best time to get started is now, as applications are due in September and community engagement is part of the process. CIPs are pretty competitive, especially during this last round, which saw a ton of interest in transportation safety. The process is rewarding in any case, as you get to work with a city employee to draft a concept, what the concept would cost, and get talking to your neighbors to advocate for safer streets in your community.

New to CIPs? We’re here to help! Reply to this email if you’re interested in submitting a CIP. If we get enough interest, we’ll form a working group to collaborate and put together some great CIP applications!

Here’s an example concept that we submitted last year for completing the 600 East Neighborhood Byway in Central City. Fingers crossed on it getting funded!
