May Streets Updates
Here’s everything we know in regards to construction and other street impacts from around the city. We’ll start with the last newsletter as the basis and add only recent updates.
Transit Updates
TRAX will see a major disruption for construction from May 3-9, a bus bridge will be in place on all three lines from Ballpark to Gallivan/Library.
Check out UTA’s 5 Year Service plan to see what’s coming in the next couple of years.
SLC Non-Street Construction Updates:
The impact of SB195 - Full impacts are still to be determined.
1000 West - The railroad street closure is still in place. Barricades cover most of the street and sidewalks.
Jordan River Trail (JRT) - The closure and detour between 400 North and 800 North remains in place.
Rio Grande Plan - A new study out of USU’s Huntsman School of Business puts the economic benefit of the RGP at $12 billion—and that’s through just year 1 of passenger operations at the (hypothetically) restored Rio Grande Depot. It’s a good time to make sure that your state and county elected representatives are aware of this generational proposal to heal the east/west divide and boost car-free transportation along the Wasatch Front.
Current SLC Projects:
Spring Pothole Repair: The big week has passed, but you can still submit pothole repair requests here! They will be continuing to address potholes throughout the warmer months.
200 South: Bike parking has finally been installed at 2nd and 2nd, with potentially more on the way (come see for yourself at our Open Meeting and victory lap ride!). Electricity has been installed at all downtown bus stops (400 West to 200 East) and we’ll eventually have lighting and arrival status boards.
1100 East & Highland Drive: There’s still some minor striping and signage missing. Almost everything is done but it’s not clear where bikes should be on the shared path portion of the street, so be vigilant that drivers might not be aware of your presence (more than normal).
300 North: Repaving between 800 West and 1000 West was delayed due to cooler weather, but the city has completed the raised crossings at West High and 700 West (and they look great!) Plus, all of the concrete curb protecting the two-way cycle track has been installed east of 800 West.
2100 South: Sidewalks are going in and the south side of the street between 700 East and 900 East should see fresh asphalt shortly.
600/700 North: Work is beginning on 700 North near Redwood Rd and will slowly move east throughout the next year.
1300 East: Construction has started between I-80 and Highland Drive.
100 South: Construction is expected to begin on May 5 and conclude by August 17.
400 South Viaduct Trail: The project has been awarded for construction and it should begin later this spring and wrap by this fall!
300 West Bikeway: There have been no updates on the construction timeline as this project goes through the “expedited review” process of SB195, but it’s still expected to be completed this year. In the meantime, a northbound travel lane has been removed between 700 South and 900 South, with 45-degree parking and extra shoulder space taking up the redundant asphalt.
Streets Resurfacing: 2025 restriping changes have not been released yet.
Livable Streets: Zone 1 in Capitol Hill has been completed, zone 2 in Sugar House is mostly done, and zones 3 in Glendale and 4 Poplar Grove are under construction. We didn’t get a picture but the bulb outs at 900 West and 500 South / 600 South are huge! (Shout out to the Chapman Library Branch and Joaquina Mexican Snacks). Zones 5-9 are currently in engineering design.
Kensington Avenue Neighborhood Byway: Construction is continuing to move quickly! The segment between 1500 East and 900 East is nearly complete. Construction on 700 East and 500 East will continue this month. Work will move all the way to State Street starting on May 5.
Jordan Meadows & Westpoint Neighborhood Byway: The project is planned to be constructed later this year.
Westminster to Sunnyside Neighborhood Byway: Public comment is still open for the draft designs, submit your thoughts here! This project has received significant pushback from members of the Yalecrest Neighborhood. Make sure the city knows you support safe byway connections!
Poplar Grove Neighborhood Byways: The next phase of byway improvements in Poplar Grove will begin soon! Check the project website periodically and we’ll make an update if there are any in the next newsletter.
Ballpark Station Crossings: The new crosswalks are still under construction but should be completed soon!
Other Notable Projects Near SLC
Millcreek 2000 East Active Transportation Enhancements - This project would complete bike facilities for a SLC-Holladay bike route. Though Salt Lake City has left a one-block gap just below 2700 South to prioritize street parking over safety. Construction in Millcreek is expected between Fall 2025 to Summer 2026.
South Salt Lake City Main Street Bike Lanes - There are plans to road diet Main Street from an unsafe 4-lane road with a 35 MPH speed limit to two car lanes plus two bike lanes and a center turn lane, with a lowered speed limit. This would help to correct a major gap in the Main Line active transportation corridor linking four cities. If you want South Salt Lake to match SLC’s 25 MPH speed limit, let them know here.
