Give us your thoughts on the future of 300 West in SLC.
ACTION ALERT: Salt Lake City is planning to reconstruct 300 West from 900 South to 2100 South early next year. That provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity: Should the city make 300 West a complete street that accommodates all road users equally?
If you generally support that notion, the city will need to hear your voice or these changes may not happen as planned. We’ll help with that. But first, we’ll quickly highlight the main changes. Then we’ll ask for your feedback.
The highlights:
Continuous, 6-foot sidewalks for the first time in recent memory, meeting ADA standards
New, two-way cycle track on the west side of the road (wide enough to plow)
Two new mid-block crossings, providing more places for people to cross and access businesses
11-foot vehicle travel lanes (with 12-foot center turn lane), encouraging slightly slower speeds
New medians to protect people on sidewalks and in the cycle track
Trees to provide shade, absorb rainwater runoff and protect people
With the addition of the Gail Miller Homeless Resource Center, 300 West is increasingly needed as a route for people walking, rolling in wheel chairs or biking. But today there’s no space provided for people to bike, and there’s nearly a half-mile of sidewalk that was never built. Major gaps for the most vulnerable road users.
Given that the needs of the most vulnerable users aren’t addressed on the street today, we’re inclined to support. But we want to hear from you.
The type of change that could come to 300 West happens once in a generation, so it’s important we get this right. With that in mind, tell us what you think about the above changes.
