Attend UDOT’s Open House for the Capitol Hill Study!

A couple of months back, you may have heard of or contributed feedback for UDOT’s Capitol Hill Study. Despite its name, this is for all roads in northeast SLC, east of I-15, at and above 600 South and over to the University of Utah. And you can participate if you “live, work, or travel in the area,” so that’s pretty much all SLC residents and many of you who live nearby.

So far, the UDOT planners have found that people wanted less cut-through traffic in residential areas, better walking/biking/transit connections and better street design for these urban areas. The feedback they gather will go toward recommended solutions, so it’s important they continue to hear that we want safer, sweeter, and more accessible streets!

UDOT will host an open house for this study on Tuesday, April 22 from 5:30-7:30 PM at the Marmalade Library (280 W, 500 N, SLC), Multipurpose Room on the 2nd floor. There’s plenty of bike parking out front and buses 205, 455, and 470 stop right in front of the building!

While we’re glad UDOT is finally building safer infrastructure in SLC (like the Kensington Ave crossings and this study), the recommended solutions will still be impacted by SB195. According to the UDOT planner in an interview with KSL NewsRadio, they don’t yet fully understand how this study will be impacted. The planner also correctly stated that making the streets safer won’t necessarily impact traffic flow.

As we mentioned in a previous newsletter, the traffic flow of urban streets are mostly controlled by intersections and traffic signals, so slowing the maximum speed of drivers can make our streets safer for everyone with little impact on traffic. Not to mention that pedestrians, buses, trains, and cyclists should be considered in the equation especially in downtown!

The new roundabout in front of the Utah State Capitol was completed in January of 2025.
