Join Sweet Streets to advocate for more protected bike lanes by creating a “Human Protected Bike Lane” on 300 South between State and Main St! 300 South is one of Salt Lake City’s first high comfort bike lanes, except for this block, which sees its bike lane blocked by stopped cars, especially in the evening. We’re advocating for design which would protect cyclists, improve the streetscape for pedestrians, and still allow for quick stops for the many businesses along the corridor. This section of 300 South is set for reconstruction as early as 2026, so there will be an opportunity for the city to make changes shortly!
Sweet Streets has held one other Human Protected Bike Lane on South Temple in September 2024. So what is it? We’ll use cones, our bikes, and our bodies to “protect” the bike by creating a barrier in the buffer zone. We’ll stop drivers from stopping in the bike lane and cyclists can continue safely on their way behind us.
We’ll start gathering on the south side of 300 South between State and Main St at 4 PM. We’ll have some materials to make a sign, or you can hold up one of our premade flyers. At 430 PM, we’ll create the barrier in the bike lane and hold it until about 530 PM. Don’t want to stand out in the street? You can still join us! We’ll need help directing drivers in and out of parking spots, potentially tabling, and keeping an eye on things.
