200 South can become a beautiful street
The 200 South Corridor Plan is a major street redesign and reconstruction - from 400 W to 900 E. The project has been fully funded through the city’s $87 M property tax bond of 2018.
The project is envisioning 200 S as “more than just a street.” Project manager Kevin Cook describes it as a “transit corridor, complete street, and Downtown transit hub.”
AECOM is the city’s consultant, assigning Jody Pearson and Kimberly Feldbauer to the project.
They have “aspirations to create an iconic corridor where businesses thrive, residents feel comfortable and safe walking, transit users navigate easily, and visitors build lasting memories.”
200 S as a frequent transit corridor and complete street are in the city’s Downtown Plan and its Transit Master Plan, while UTA has been seeking a Downtown bus hub for years. The city envisions the hub as “a multi-modal transit center to serve as a focal point where all modes of travel seamlessly converge.”
Bus-only lanes are being considered for the project, as well as protected bike/scooter lanes.
The city has completed their first stage of public outreach, and are currently processing feedback into intermediate designs.
The city/AECOM expect to have the refined options ready for public consumption before the end of the year. The transportation department hopes to be bidding the project in Fall 2021, and starting the two-year construction project in 2022.
