Neighborhood Byway 2025

SLC needs to build its Neighborhood Byways
by no later than 2025.

What’s a
Neighborhood Byway?

Neighborhood Byways are family-friendly streets that include treatments to discourage through-traffic.
They often include elements of traffic calming to promote slow, safe speeds by local vehicle traffic.
And they include treatments that make crossings safer at busier intersections.

Best practices for creating Neighborhood Byways — sometimes called Bicycle Boulevards — come from
the National Association of City Transportation Officials.

  • Elements of a Neighborhood Byway

  • Route Planning: Direct access to destinations.

  • Signs and Pavement Markings: Easy to find and to follow.

  • Speed Management: Slow motor vehicle speeds.

  • Volume Management: Low or reduced motor vehicle volumes.

  • Major Street Crossings: Safe and convenient crossings.

  • Green Infrastructure: Enhancing environments.

Where Are These?

The city identified a network of Neighborhood Byways in its Bike-Ped Master Plan, which was adopted in 2015. So far, only one has been created. We’ve created a map showing how our Neighborhood Byways would fill out our network of family-friendly streets.

We Have The Power

We’re calling on the Mayor and City Council to identify an ongoing source of
funding to build a network of
Neighborhood Byways by 2025.

We need your help.
